Background of the Study

Caregiver stress is an emerging concern in the care of elderly patients, particularly in regions where the elderly population is growing rapidly. In Borno State, where there is limited access to healthcare services and an increasing elderly population, the burden on caregivers is significant. Elderly care often falls on family members or informal caregivers, who face physical, emotional, and financial stress. This stress can affect the well-being of both the caregiver and the elderly individual, leading to deteriorating health outcomes, especially among vulnerable groups.

The mental and physical health of caregivers in Borno State has not been extensively studied, and the connection between caregiver stress and the health of elderly patients is often overlooked. Caregiver stress can lead to burnout, depression, anxiety, and even physical ailments, while simultaneously affecting the quality of care provided to elderly individuals. Investigating the relationship between caregiver stress and elderly care outcomes is critical for addressing the needs of both caregivers and elderly patients in this region.

Statement of the Problem

Caregivers in Borno State are under significant stress, impacting their health and the quality of care they provide to elderly patients. There is limited data on the prevalence and consequences of caregiver stress in this context. This study aims to investigate the effect of caregiver stress on the well-being of elderly patients, providing valuable insight into how stress management strategies can improve both caregiver health and elderly care outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of caregiver stress among family members caring for elderly patients in Borno State.
  2. To examine the impact of caregiver stress on the physical and mental well-being of elderly patients.
  3. To recommend strategies to mitigate caregiver stress and improve elderly care in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of caregiver stress among individuals caring for elderly patients in Borno State?
  2. How does caregiver stress affect the physical and mental well-being of elderly patients in Borno State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce caregiver stress and enhance the quality of care for elderly patients in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Caregiver stress is prevalent among individuals caring for elderly patients in Borno State.
  2. High levels of caregiver stress are associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes for elderly patients.
  3. Implementing stress management strategies for caregivers will improve the well-being of both caregivers and elderly patients in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on family caregivers of elderly individuals in Borno State, with data gathered through surveys, interviews, and health assessments of caregivers and their elderly patients. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reporting and difficulties accessing remote areas for data collection.
