Background of the Study

In many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kebbi State, traditional medicine plays an integral role in the healthcare system, especially in rural communities. It is often the first line of treatment for children, with practices that range from herbal remedies to spiritual healing. Traditional healers are widely trusted in these communities, and their influence on health-seeking behavior can significantly affect the overall health outcomes of children (Koch et al., 2023). Despite the widespread use of traditional medicine, there are concerns about its safety and efficacy, especially when it interferes with or delays evidence-based medical treatments.

Pediatric health-seeking behavior refers to the decisions made by parents or caregivers regarding the types of healthcare services they access for their children, which are influenced by factors such as cultural beliefs, socio-economic status, and previous health experiences (Williams & Sillah, 2024). This study will examine the role of traditional medicine in shaping the health-seeking behaviors of parents in Kebbi State, and the potential implications for pediatric health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

The use of traditional medicine in Kebbi State is prevalent, but its impact on pediatric health-seeking behavior is not well understood. Some families may delay seeking formal medical care due to their reliance on traditional healing practices, which could affect timely diagnosis and treatment. This study will assess the influence of traditional medicine on health-seeking behavior and how it may affect pediatric health outcomes in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the extent of traditional medicine use in pediatric health-seeking behavior in Kebbi State.
  2. To examine the factors influencing parents' decisions to use traditional medicine for treating their children.
  3. To evaluate the impact of traditional medicine on pediatric health outcomes in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is the use of traditional medicine in pediatric health-seeking behavior in Kebbi State?
  2. What factors influence parents' decisions to use traditional medicine for treating children in Kebbi State?
  3. How does the use of traditional medicine affect pediatric health outcomes in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional medicine plays a significant role in pediatric health-seeking behavior in Kebbi State.
  2. The use of traditional medicine delays formal medical treatment, potentially leading to poorer health outcomes for children.
  3. Cultural beliefs and lack of access to healthcare facilities are significant factors influencing the use of traditional medicine in pediatric care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on parents and caregivers of children under five in rural and urban areas of Kebbi State. Data will be collected through interviews and surveys. Limitations include potential biases due to social desirability and the challenge of accessing remote communities.

Definitions of Terms
