Background of the Study

Pediatric emergency care is a critical component of healthcare, as it provides timely interventions that can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality in children. In Kebbi State, like many parts of Nigeria, access to quality emergency care is often challenged by inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and a shortage of skilled healthcare workers, especially in rural areas (Olaniran et al., 2024). Pediatric emergencies, including trauma, respiratory distress, dehydration, and infections, require immediate attention to ensure positive outcomes for children.

Effective pediatric emergency care services rely on prompt assessment, early diagnosis, and appropriate interventions. However, despite these needs, studies indicate that many healthcare facilities in Kebbi State may lack the necessary resources and trained personnel to manage pediatric emergencies effectively. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a significant role in responding to these emergencies, but their training and preparedness are often under-researched. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State, with a particular focus on the role of nursing staff and the challenges they face.

Statement of the Problem

The effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State is questionable, with concerns over delays in treatment, inadequate resources, and insufficient training of healthcare workers. While pediatric nurses are central to emergency care, their ability to respond effectively to emergencies may be compromised by gaps in their training, insufficient equipment, and other systemic barriers. This study seeks to assess how these factors influence the overall effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services in the state and to propose strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State.
  2. To assess the role of nurses in managing pediatric emergencies in Kebbi State.
  3. To identify challenges faced by pediatric emergency care services in the state.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State?
  2. What role do nurses play in the management of pediatric emergencies in Kebbi State?
  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric emergency care services in Kebbi State are ineffective due to resource constraints and lack of skilled personnel.
  2. Nurses in Kebbi State face significant challenges in managing pediatric emergencies.
  3. The availability of training and resources improves the effectiveness of pediatric emergency care services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric emergency care services provided in public health facilities across Kebbi State. Data will be collected from nurses, healthcare managers, and patients' medical records. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and variability in practices across different healthcare facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nurses: Healthcare professionals responsible for providing emergency care and supporting pediatric patients in emergency situations.
  • Effectiveness: The degree to which pediatric emergency care services meet established health outcomes, including timely intervention, reduced morbidity, and improved recovery rates.
