Background of the Study

Pediatric nursing is a specialized field focused on the healthcare needs of children, which requires high levels of skill, compassion, and attention to detail. However, a growing body of research highlights the impact of high workloads on nurses’ ability to deliver quality care. In Nigeria, particularly in states like Gombe, pediatric nurses are often faced with high patient-to-nurse ratios due to staffing shortages, which can negatively impact patient care outcomes (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

The quality of care provided by pediatric nurses is influenced by several factors, including the complexity of the patients’ conditions, workload, and the availability of resources. High workloads have been shown to lead to nurse burnout, decreased attention to individual patient needs, and increased risk of medical errors (Chigozie et al., 2024). Given the critical nature of pediatric care, especially in the context of childhood diseases, ensuring that nurses are not overburdened is essential to maintain high-quality care.

This study seeks to evaluate the effect of pediatric nurses’ workload on the quality of care provided to children in Gombe State, examining both the challenges faced by nurses and the impact of these challenges on patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

In Gombe State, pediatric nurses often face excessive workloads due to inadequate staffing and an increasing number of patients, especially in rural healthcare settings. As a result, nurses are unable to provide the level of care required for children with complex health needs. This issue contributes to delayed treatments, increased hospital readmissions, and poorer health outcomes for pediatric patients (Ibrahim & Garba, 2024).

The relationship between nursing workload and the quality of pediatric care has not been sufficiently explored in Gombe State, where healthcare delivery is challenged by limited resources and high patient volumes. This study will explore how the workload of pediatric nurses impacts the quality of care and patient outcomes in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of pediatric nurses’ workload on the quality of care in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the patient-to-nurse ratio and its effect on the delivery of pediatric care in Gombe State.
  3. To identify strategies for improving the working conditions of pediatric nurses in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. How does the workload of pediatric nurses affect the quality of care in Gombe State?
  2. What is the patient-to-nurse ratio in pediatric wards in Gombe State, and how does it affect care delivery?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce workload and improve the quality of pediatric care in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nurses’ workload negatively impacts the quality of care provided to children in Gombe State.
  2. High patient-to-nurse ratios lead to lower quality of pediatric care in Gombe State.
  3. Implementing strategies to reduce pediatric nurses' workload improves the quality of care in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on pediatric nurses working in healthcare facilities in Gombe State. Data will be collected from hospital records, nurse surveys, and interviews. Limitations may include variations in workload across different hospitals, differences in care quality due to varying infrastructure, and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Workload: The amount of work assigned to or expected from a nurse, including the number of patients to be attended to in a given period.
  • Quality of Care: The degree to which healthcare services provided to individuals or populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes.
  • Pediatric Nurses: Nurses who specialize in providing medical care to children from infancy through adolescence.
