Background of the Study

Pediatric surgical patients often require comprehensive care that extends beyond medical treatment to include emotional, psychological, and social support. Family-centered nursing is an approach that involves actively engaging family members in the care process, recognizing their critical role in the child’s recovery (Kuo et al., 2024). Studies have shown that when families participate in post-surgical care, children experience reduced stress, faster healing, and better treatment adherence (Smith & Jones, 2023).

In Nigeria, family-centered nursing is gradually being integrated into pediatric care, but its implementation varies across regions. In Kebbi State, where healthcare infrastructure is still developing, the extent to which family-centered care contributes to pediatric surgical recovery remains unclear. Many hospitals operate under traditional care models that limit family involvement, potentially affecting recovery outcomes (Bello et al., 2023).

Given the importance of a holistic approach to pediatric surgical care, this study seeks to assess the impact of family-centered nursing on the recovery of pediatric surgical patients in Kebbi State. The findings will help inform policies and practices aimed at improving pediatric post-surgical outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Pediatric post-surgical recovery is often complicated by factors such as inadequate pain management, anxiety, and poor adherence to follow-up care. Traditional nursing approaches that exclude family involvement may contribute to prolonged hospital stays and increased complications (Aliyu & Garba, 2024).

Despite growing evidence supporting family-centered nursing, many healthcare facilities in Kebbi State have not fully adopted this model. Cultural factors, limited nurse training, and resistance to change hinder its implementation. If these barriers persist, pediatric surgical patients may continue to experience suboptimal recovery outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the role of family-centered nursing in improving pediatric surgical recovery in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of family-centered nursing on the recovery of pediatric surgical patients.
  2. To examine the extent of family involvement in pediatric post-surgical care in Kebbi State.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of family-centered nursing in the state.

Research Questions

  1. How does family-centered nursing impact the recovery of pediatric surgical patients?
  2. What is the level of family involvement in pediatric post-surgical care in Kebbi State?
  3. What challenges hinder the implementation of family-centered nursing in the state?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family-centered nursing significantly improves the recovery of pediatric surgical patients.
  2. The level of family involvement in pediatric post-surgical care is low in Kebbi State.
  3. Several challenges hinder the effective implementation of family-centered nursing in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on hospitals and healthcare facilities in Kebbi State that provide pediatric surgical services. It will assess the role of family involvement in post-surgical recovery through surveys, interviews, and hospital records. Limitations may include variations in family participation levels, differences in hospital policies, and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Surgical Patients: Children undergoing surgical procedures for medical conditions.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: The process of healing and regaining health following a surgical procedure.
