Background of the Study
Palliative care is an essential component of healthcare for patients with chronic illnesses, particularly cancer, where the goal shifts from curative treatment to enhancing the quality of life by managing symptoms and providing emotional and psychological support (Green et al., 2023). In Gombe State, like many other parts of Nigeria, cancer patients often face limited access to specialized oncology care. As a result, nurses play a pivotal role in palliative care, addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of cancer patients and their families.
Nurses in palliative care settings are responsible for providing comfort, pain management, symptom relief, and emotional support. However, in resource-limited environments such as Gombe State, nurses may face significant challenges in delivering comprehensive palliative care due to inadequate training, lack of palliative care education, and insufficient access to pain management medications. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in providing palliative care to cancer patients in Gombe State, examining their knowledge, attitudes, practices, and the barriers they encounter in offering effective care.
Statement of the Problem
While the importance of palliative care for cancer patients is widely recognized, the role of nurses in providing this care in Gombe State is not well-documented. Nurses are essential in delivering palliative care, but challenges such as insufficient resources, limited training, and a lack of public awareness about palliative care may limit their effectiveness. Understanding the current role of nurses in palliative care, as well as the challenges they face, is essential for improving care delivery and ensuring that cancer patients in Gombe State receive the support they need during their illness. This study aims to explore the contributions of nurses to palliative care for cancer patients in the region and propose solutions to enhance the quality of care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward palliative care for cancer patients in Gombe State.
2. To evaluate the role of nurses in managing symptoms and providing support to cancer patients in palliative care settings.
3. To identify the barriers nurses face in providing effective palliative care and recommend strategies to overcome these challenges.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge and awareness among nurses in Gombe State regarding palliative care for cancer patients?
2. What roles do nurses play in providing palliative care for cancer patients in Gombe State?
3. What are the challenges that nurses face in delivering palliative care to cancer patients in Gombe State, and how can these be addressed?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Gombe State with specialized training in palliative care provide more effective symptom management and emotional support to cancer patients than those without such training.
2. There is a significant gap in the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward palliative care for cancer patients in Gombe State.
3. Access to pain management medications and better training opportunities will significantly improve the quality of palliative care provided by nurses in Gombe State.

• Palliative Care: A specialized form of healthcare that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and suffering associated with serious illnesses such as cancer, with an emphasis on quality of life.
• Cancer Care: Healthcare services focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer, including both curative and palliative interventions.
• Symptom Management: The process of alleviating or controlling symptoms associated with a disease, particularly in palliative care, such as pain, nausea, and fatigue.
