Background of the Study

HIV counseling is a critical component of HIV prevention and care, particularly in regions with high HIV prevalence such as Bauchi State. Nurse-led HIV counseling plays a vital role in providing emotional support, education, and information to individuals affected by or at risk for HIV. Nurses are often the first healthcare providers who engage with patients, offering counseling services that focus on prevention, testing, treatment, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) (Ali et al., 2024).

In Bauchi State, where HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health challenge, nurses provide essential services to address stigma, promote testing, and encourage safe practices. However, the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in terms of increasing HIV awareness, promoting testing, and encouraging ART adherence has yet to be thoroughly evaluated. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led HIV counseling in Bauchi State, with a focus on its impact on HIV prevention, care, and treatment outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

HIV/AIDS remains a public health concern in Bauchi State, with persistent challenges related to awareness, testing, and treatment adherence. While nurse-led HIV counseling is an essential intervention, its effectiveness in improving outcomes such as increased testing, reduced stigma, and better adherence to ART is not well-documented. Understanding the effectiveness of this intervention is crucial for improving HIV prevention and treatment efforts in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led HIV counseling in promoting HIV awareness and prevention in Bauchi State.

2. To assess the impact of nurse-led HIV counseling on HIV testing rates and treatment adherence in Bauchi State.

3. To identify factors that influence the effectiveness of nurse-led HIV counseling in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. How effective is nurse-led HIV counseling in promoting HIV awareness and prevention in Bauchi State?

2. What is the impact of nurse-led HIV counseling on HIV testing rates and treatment adherence in Bauchi State?

3. What factors influence the effectiveness of nurse-led HIV counseling in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led HIV counseling significantly increases HIV awareness and prevention in Bauchi State.

2. Nurse-led HIV counseling leads to higher rates of HIV testing and improved ART adherence in Bauchi State.

3. Socio-cultural factors and patient trust significantly influence the effectiveness of nurse-led HIV counseling in Bauchi State.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Led HIV Counseling: Counseling services provided by nurses to individuals regarding HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and support, focusing on emotional and psychological support.

• HIV Testing: The process of diagnosing HIV infection through blood tests or other diagnostic procedures.

• ART Adherence: The consistent and proper use of antiretroviral therapy by individuals living with HIV to manage the condition and reduce transmission risk.
