Background of the Study

Continuing education is essential in nursing to ensure that nurses stay updated with the latest practices, technologies, and research in healthcare. Given the dynamic nature of the medical field, continuous learning is necessary to maintain high standards of patient care and improve nursing practice. In Yobe State, healthcare providers face significant challenges, including resource shortages, limited access to training opportunities, and high turnover rates among nurses. Continuing education programs can help address these challenges by equipping nurses with up-to-date knowledge and skills to provide quality care (Ibrahim et al., 2024).

Research has shown that nurses who participate in continuing education programs demonstrate improved clinical skills, increased competence, and higher levels of job satisfaction. Additionally, continuing education contributes to better patient outcomes by ensuring that nurses are well-versed in evidence-based practices and emerging health technologies (Adebowale et al., 2023). This study will assess the effect of continuing education on the quality of nursing practice in Yobe State.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate access to continuing education programs for nurses in Yobe State has contributed to knowledge gaps, which negatively affects the quality of nursing practice and patient care. While some nurses may have opportunities for further education, many are constrained by financial limitations, lack of time, and insufficient institutional support. As a result, the quality of nursing practice in the state may be compromised, potentially leading to poor health outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate the role of continuing education in enhancing the quality of nursing practice in Yobe State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the current availability and accessibility of continuing education programs for nurses in Yobe State.

2. To assess the impact of continuing education on the quality of nursing practice in Yobe State.

3. To identify barriers preventing nurses from participating in continuing education programs in Yobe State.

Research Questions

1. How accessible are continuing education programs for nurses in Yobe State?

2. What is the impact of continuing education on nursing practice quality in Yobe State?

3. What factors prevent nurses from participating in continuing education programs in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses who engage in continuing education demonstrate higher levels of competence and quality in nursing practice in Yobe State.

2. The lack of financial and institutional support significantly limits nurses' participation in continuing education in Yobe State.

3. Continuing education is positively correlated with improved patient outcomes in Yobe State.

Definitions of Terms
