Background of the Study

Health education and disease prevention are critical components of public health, particularly in regions like Borno State, which has faced a range of health challenges due to conflict, displacement, and limited healthcare infrastructure. Nurses, as primary caregivers, play an essential role in educating patients and the community on preventive healthcare practices, including vaccination, hygiene, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications to prevent chronic diseases (Awodiran et al., 2024). In Borno State, the disruption caused by insurgency and displacement has strained healthcare services, making health education and disease prevention efforts even more vital.

Nurses' roles extend beyond clinical care, as they are often the most accessible healthcare providers, especially in rural and underserved areas. Nurses provide vital information on managing communicable diseases, preventing the spread of infections, and ensuring the well-being of mothers and children. While nurses in Borno State are engaged in health education, the impact of these efforts on public health outcomes has not been sufficiently studied. This study seeks to explore the role of nurses in health education and disease prevention in Borno State, focusing on their activities, challenges, and outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant role nurses play in health education and disease prevention, many communities in Borno State face barriers to accessing these services. Conflict, insecurity, and a lack of resources limit the capacity of healthcare systems to effectively implement disease prevention strategies. This study seeks to examine the contributions of nurses to health education and disease prevention in Borno State and explore the challenges they face in these roles.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of nurses in health education and disease prevention in Borno State.

2. To identify the barriers nurses face in delivering health education and disease prevention services in Borno State.

3. To evaluate the impact of nurses' health education efforts on disease prevention in Borno State.

Research Questions

1. What is the role of nurses in health education and disease prevention in Borno State?

2. What are the barriers that nurses face in delivering health education and disease prevention services in Borno State?

3. How effective are nurses’ health education efforts in preventing disease in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Borno State play a significant role in health education and disease prevention.

2. Barriers such as insecurity and limited resources hinder nurses’ ability to effectively deliver health education and disease prevention services in Borno State.

3. Nurses' health education efforts are associated with reduced incidences of preventable diseases in Borno State.

Definitions of Terms
