Background of the Study

Workplace burnout is a critical issue that affects healthcare professionals globally, with nurses being particularly vulnerable due to the demanding nature of their work. Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment (Afolabi et al., 2023). Nurses in Yobe State, as in many parts of Nigeria, face significant challenges in their workplace, including high patient loads, insufficient staffing, inadequate resources, and exposure to traumatic situations, all of which contribute to burnout (Umar & Sulaimon, 2024). The impact of burnout on nurses can result in decreased job satisfaction, lower quality of care, and high turnover rates, which can further strain healthcare systems.

Nurses are at the frontline of patient care, and their well-being is essential not only for their health but also for the health of the patients they serve. While there has been some focus on healthcare worker burnout in urban centers, there is limited research on the extent and impact of burnout among nurses in rural settings like Yobe State. This study seeks to appraise the prevalence of workplace burnout among nurses in Yobe State, examining contributing factors, consequences, and possible solutions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role nurses play in providing quality healthcare, workplace burnout has been identified as a growing concern in Yobe State. Factors such as excessive workloads, inadequate support systems, and poor working conditions are likely contributing to the rising incidence of burnout among nurses. Burnout not only negatively affects nurses' mental health and well-being but also compromises patient care and healthcare delivery. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and impact of burnout among nurses in Yobe State and provide recommendations for mitigating this issue.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of workplace burnout among nurses in Yobe State.

2. To identify the factors contributing to burnout among nurses in Yobe State.

3. To recommend strategies for reducing workplace burnout among nurses in Yobe State.
