Background of the Study

Hypertension, often referred to as the "silent killer," is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and kidney failure. In Adamawa State, as in much of Nigeria, hypertension remains prevalent, with many individuals unaware of their condition until complications arise. Nurses play a key role in managing hypertensive patients by performing assessments, educating patients on lifestyle changes, providing medication management, and monitoring for complications (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024). Nurses' strategies in managing hypertension are crucial to improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases in the region.

The management of hypertension involves both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, including medication adherence, diet modification, physical activity, and stress reduction. This study aims to appraise the nursing strategies used in the management of hypertensive patients in Adamawa State and identify effective practices, as well as barriers to optimal care.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant role of nurses in the management of hypertension, patients in Adamawa State often present with poorly controlled hypertension, leading to an increased risk of complications. Many nurses may lack the necessary skills and resources to effectively manage hypertension, and patients frequently struggle with adherence to prescribed treatments. There is also a need for a more comprehensive understanding of the strategies that nurses employ in the management of hypertensive patients. This study seeks to evaluate these strategies and identify ways to improve them.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the strategies employed by nurses in managing hypertensive patients in Adamawa State.

2. To identify the barriers faced by nurses in effectively managing hypertension.

3. To recommend strategies for improving hypertension management by nurses in Adamawa State.

Research Questions

1. What nursing strategies are employed in the management of hypertensive patients in Adamawa State?

2. What challenges do nurses face in managing hypertension effectively?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve hypertension management by nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Adamawa State employ a range of strategies in managing hypertensive patients.

2. Barriers such as limited resources, inadequate training, and patient non-compliance hinder effective hypertension management by nurses.

3. Providing additional training and improving resources will enhance the ability of nurses to manage hypertensive patients effectively.
