Background of the Study
Telemedicine, the use of telecommunications technology to provide healthcare remotely, has emerged as a powerful tool in improving access to healthcare services, especially in underserved and remote areas. In Nigeria, where the healthcare system faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of healthcare professionals, telemedicine offers an opportunity to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery (Adeoye et al., 2024). Nurses, as key healthcare providers, are increasingly involved in telemedicine, playing a critical role in patient monitoring, consultation, and education via telecommunication platforms.
In Gombe State, the implementation of telemedicine has been slow but is gaining attention as an alternative means of reaching remote communities. Nurses in the state are pivotal in ensuring the successful implementation of telemedicine initiatives. However, their ability to effectively integrate telemedicine into patient care remains under-explored. This study seeks to assess the implementation of telemedicine by nurses in Gombe State, examine the challenges they face, and identify strategies to improve telemedicine adoption.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of telemedicine, the healthcare system in Gombe State faces numerous challenges in its implementation, particularly regarding infrastructure, technology access, and professional readiness. Nurses are integral to telemedicine, yet there is limited understanding of how effectively they are implementing these services, especially in rural and underserved communities. The lack of training, limited access to technology, and resistance to change are factors that may hinder the effectiveness of telemedicine in Gombe State.
This study aims to assess how nurses are implementing telemedicine in Gombe State, identify challenges they encounter, and propose strategies to enhance telemedicine integration in the state’s healthcare system.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of implementation of telemedicine by nurses in Gombe State.
2. To identify the challenges nurses face in implementing telemedicine.
3. To recommend strategies to improve the adoption and use of telemedicine by nurses in Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. How widely is telemedicine being implemented by nurses in Gombe State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in the implementation of telemedicine?
3. What strategies can be employed to improve telemedicine implementation by nurses in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Gombe State are implementing telemedicine at a low level.
2. Lack of training, inadequate technology, and resistance to change are major barriers to effective telemedicine implementation by nurses.
3. Implementing targeted training programs and improving infrastructure will enhance the adoption of telemedicine by nurses.
