Background of the Study

Rural healthcare in Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to medical supplies, and a shortage of trained healthcare professionals. Nurses in rural areas are often expected to perform a wide range of duties, from routine care to emergency interventions, with limited resources and training opportunities. These challenges are particularly evident in Taraba State, a predominantly rural region in northeastern Nigeria, where healthcare access is restricted due to both geographic and economic factors (Usman & Bello, 2024).

Despite these challenges, nurses in rural areas play a pivotal role in ensuring the health and well-being of the population. They are involved in maternal and child health care, disease prevention, and the management of chronic conditions. However, the ability of nurses in Taraba State to provide effective healthcare is constrained by these challenges. This study seeks to assess the challenges faced by nurses in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State and to propose solutions to improve healthcare delivery.

Statement of the Problem

Nurses in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State face numerous challenges, including inadequate training, lack of essential medical equipment, and difficult working conditions. These factors hinder their ability to provide quality care and contribute to poor health outcomes (Adegbite & Yusuf, 2024). Rural healthcare facilities in the state are often understaffed, and nurses frequently encounter logistical challenges that impede the delivery of timely and effective care.

This study aims to assess the specific challenges faced by nurses in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State and identify strategies to address these issues.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the challenges faced by nurses in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State.

2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on healthcare delivery in rural areas.

3. To propose strategies for improving nursing care in rural healthcare facilities in Taraba State.

Research Questions

1. What challenges do nurses face in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State?

2. How do these challenges impact healthcare delivery in rural areas?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nursing care in rural healthcare settings?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in rural healthcare settings in Taraba State face significant challenges in providing quality care.

2. Inadequate resources and lack of training negatively impact healthcare delivery in rural areas.

3. Implementing targeted interventions, such as increased training and resource allocation, will improve the quality of nursing care in rural healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

• Rural Healthcare Settings: Healthcare facilities located in rural areas, often characterized by limited resources and access to healthcare professionals.

• Nursing Challenges: The difficulties faced by nurses in delivering healthcare services, including inadequate resources, lack of training, and high patient loads.
