Background of the Study
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that primarily affects individuals of African descent, with a significant prevalence in Nigeria. It is characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to the deformation of red blood cells and the obstruction of blood flow, causing pain, anemia, and other serious complications. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2024), Nigeria accounts for a large proportion of global sickle cell disease cases, and the management of SCD remains a major public health challenge. Nurses play a critical role in the care and management of SCD patients by providing pain relief, administering medications, monitoring for complications, and offering psychosocial support (Usman & Bello, 2024).
In Kano State, the high prevalence of SCD has led to a growing recognition of the need for specialized nursing care for affected individuals. However, despite the importance of nursing interventions, there is limited research on how nurses contribute to the management of SCD in the state. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in managing sickle cell disease in Kano State, identify challenges they face, and propose strategies for improving care.
Statement of the Problem
The management of sickle cell disease in Kano State is hampered by various challenges, including inadequate healthcare resources, insufficient specialized training for nurses, and a lack of public awareness about the disease. Sickle cell disease patients often experience episodes of severe pain, anemia, and organ damage, requiring continuous care and management (Ahmed et al., 2024). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, have a significant role in managing these challenges, but there is insufficient understanding of their contributions, which limits the effectiveness of care.
This study aims to evaluate the role of nurses in the management of sickle cell disease, identify barriers to effective care, and recommend strategies for improving nursing interventions in the management of this chronic condition in Kano State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in the management of sickle cell disease in Kano State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing care for SCD patients.
3. To propose strategies for improving nursing care in the management of sickle cell disease.
Research Questions
1. What is the role of nurses in the management of sickle cell disease in Kano State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in managing SCD patients?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance nursing care in the management of sickle cell disease?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses play a significant role in managing sickle cell disease in Kano State.
2. Lack of specialized training and resources negatively affects the quality of care provided by nurses.
3. Implementing targeted training and resource improvements will enhance the effectiveness of nursing care for SCD patients.

• Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): A genetic disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells that cause blockages in blood flow.
• Nursing Care in SCD Management: The provision of medical, emotional, and psychosocial support by nurses to patients with sickle cell disease.
