Background of the Study
Palliative care nursing plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients by providing physical, emotional, and psychological support. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2024), palliative care focuses on relieving pain, managing symptoms, and improving the overall well-being of patients with life-threatening illnesses. Cancer patients, particularly those in advanced stages, require specialized nursing care to address their complex needs, including pain management, psychological support, and end-of-life care (Usman & Bello, 2024).
In Niger State, where healthcare resources are often limited, the availability and effectiveness of palliative care services remain a challenge. Many cancer patients experience inadequate pain relief, emotional distress, and a lack of access to trained palliative care nurses (Ahmed et al., 2024). Despite the growing recognition of palliative care’s importance, there is limited research on how nurses provide these services and the challenges they face in Niger State.
This study aims to evaluate the role of palliative care nursing in cancer management in Niger State, assess the effectiveness of current nursing interventions, and identify areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Cancer patients in Niger State continue to face significant challenges in accessing quality palliative care, leading to unnecessary suffering, poor symptom control, and diminished quality of life. Studies indicate that a lack of trained personnel, inadequate pain management protocols, and cultural barriers hinder effective palliative care (Adegbite & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, many healthcare facilities in the region lack specialized palliative care units, making it difficult for nurses to provide comprehensive support to cancer patients (Olawale & Hassan, 2024).
Given these gaps, it is necessary to evaluate how nurses contribute to palliative care in cancer management, identify the challenges they encounter, and propose strategies for improving palliative care services in Niger State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in palliative care for cancer patients in Niger State.
2. To evaluate the challenges nurses face in providing palliative care services.
3. To propose strategies for improving palliative care nursing in cancer management.
Research Questions
1. What is the role of nurses in palliative care for cancer patients in Niger State?
2. What are the major challenges affecting the provision of palliative care by nurses?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance palliative care nursing?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses play a significant role in palliative care for cancer patients in Niger State.
2. Limited resources and lack of specialized training negatively affect palliative care nursing.
3. Implementing targeted training and resource allocation will improve palliative care services.
