Background of the Study

Nursing ethics refer to the moral principles and professional standards that guide nurses in providing ethical, compassionate, and patient-centered care (International Council of Nurses [ICN], 2024). Ethical nursing practices, such as confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for patient rights, are essential in building patient trust and ensuring quality healthcare delivery (Usman & Bello, 2024).

In Gombe State, concerns about ethical lapses, such as patient neglect, breaches of confidentiality, and inadequate communication, have raised questions about the level of trust patients have in nurses (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Trust is a critical component of healthcare, as it influences patients’ willingness to seek medical attention, adhere to treatment plans, and engage with healthcare providers (Olawale & Hassan, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of nursing ethics on patient trust in Gombe State, assessing the role of ethical behavior in enhancing the nurse-patient relationship.

Statement of the Problem

A decline in patient trust in healthcare professionals has been observed in various healthcare settings, with reports of unethical behavior, lack of transparency, and poor communication contributing to the problem (Adegbite & Yusuf, 2024). In Gombe State, cases of ethical violations in nursing have raised concerns about the impact of professional ethics on patient trust.

Despite the critical role of ethics in nursing, there is limited research on how adherence to ethical principles influences patient trust in Gombe State. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing nurses’ adherence to ethical guidelines and its impact on patient confidence in healthcare services.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of nursing ethics on patient trust in Gombe State.

2. To identify ethical challenges faced by nurses in healthcare settings.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing ethical nursing practices to improve patient trust.

Research Questions

1. How do nursing ethics influence patient trust in Gombe State?

2. What ethical challenges do nurses face in delivering patient care?

3. What strategies can improve ethical nursing practices to enhance patient trust?

Research Hypotheses

1. Adherence to nursing ethics significantly enhances patient trust.
