Background of the Study

Effective communication is a fundamental aspect of healthcare delivery, particularly in nursing. Communication between nurses and patients significantly influences patient compliance with treatment regimens, medication adherence, and overall health outcomes (Adewale & Yusuf, 2024). Nurses who communicate effectively can build trust, educate patients on their conditions, and ensure they follow medical advice, leading to improved patient care outcomes (Ogunyemi et al., 2023).

In Kebbi State, as in many parts of Nigeria, poor communication between healthcare providers and patients has been identified as a barrier to effective treatment. Language barriers, low literacy levels, and cultural differences often hinder nurses’ ability to convey crucial health information, leading to poor compliance with prescribed treatments (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024).

This study seeks to assess the impact of nurses' communication skills on patient compliance in Kebbi State. By identifying the key communication challenges and their effects on healthcare delivery, this study aims to recommend strategies for improving nurse-patient interactions.

Statement of the Problem

Non-compliance with medical instructions is a major challenge in healthcare, leading to poor treatment outcomes, increased hospital readmissions, and disease progression (Ahmed et al., 2024). In Kebbi State, many patients fail to adhere to prescribed treatment regimens due to miscommunication, lack of patient education, or a lack of trust in healthcare providers. Nurses, being the primary point of contact for patients, play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and adherence to medical advice.

Despite the importance of communication in nursing, there is limited research on how nurses' communication skills impact patient compliance in Kebbi State. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship between nurses' communication skills and patient adherence to treatment.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of nurses' communication skills on patient compliance in Kebbi State.

2. To identify communication barriers affecting nurse-patient interactions.

3. To recommend strategies for improving communication skills among nurses for better patient compliance.

Research Questions

1. How do nurses’ communication skills influence patient compliance in Kebbi State?

2. What are the key communication barriers affecting nurse-patient interactions?

3. What strategies can improve communication skills among nurses to enhance patient compliance?

Research Hypotheses

1. Effective communication by nurses positively influences patient compliance.

2. Language barriers and poor communication skills contribute to low patient adherence.

3. Training nurses in communication techniques will improve patient compliance rates.

Definitions of Terms
