Background of the Study

Leadership is a crucial factor in the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. In nursing, leadership styles significantly influence job performance, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes (Adeyemo & Usman, 2024). Different leadership styles, including transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership, affect how nurses perform their duties, their motivation levels, and their commitment to patient care (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

Minna General Hospital in Niger State, like many healthcare institutions in Nigeria, faces challenges related to staff motivation, workload, and overall job performance. A strong and effective leadership approach can help address these challenges by fostering a supportive work environment, encouraging professional growth, and improving nurses’ job satisfaction (Ogunyemi & Hassan, 2024). However, ineffective leadership can lead to burnout, reduced morale, and high turnover rates, which ultimately affect patient care quality.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of different leadership styles on nurses' job performance in Minna General Hospital, Niger State. Understanding how leadership influences nurses’ efficiency and effectiveness will provide insights into strategies for improving management practices in healthcare institutions.

Statement of the Problem

Nurses play a vital role in healthcare delivery, yet their job performance is often affected by the leadership styles of their supervisors. In many Nigerian hospitals, including Minna General Hospital, there is a lack of clear leadership strategies tailored to improving nurses’ efficiency and work environment (Olawale & Yusuf, 2023). Studies have shown that ineffective leadership contributes to job dissatisfaction, high staff turnover, and decreased patient care quality (Eze et al., 2024).

Despite the recognized importance of leadership in nursing, there is limited research on the relationship between leadership styles and job performance among nurses in Niger State. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing how different leadership styles impact nurses’ job performance in Minna General Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the relationship between leadership styles and nurses' job performance in Minna General Hospital.

2. To identify the most effective leadership styles for enhancing nurses’ efficiency and job satisfaction.

3. To propose recommendations for improving leadership approaches in healthcare management.

Research Questions

1. How do different leadership styles affect nurses’ job performance in Minna General Hospital?

2. What leadership style is most effective in improving nurses’ efficiency and job satisfaction?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance leadership in healthcare management?

Research Hypotheses

1. Leadership styles have a significant impact on nurses’ job performance.

2. Transformational leadership is more effective than transactional or laissez-faire leadership in improving nurses’ job performance.

3. Implementing structured leadership training will improve healthcare leadership and nurses’ job performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses and healthcare administrators at Minna General Hospital, Niger State. The study may be limited by potential biases in self-reported data and reluctance of nurses to openly critique their leadership.

Definitions of Terms

• Leadership Style: The approach and strategies used by a leader to manage and guide their subordinates.

• Job Performance: The effectiveness and efficiency with which nurses perform their duties in a healthcare setting.
