Background of the Study
Leadership is a crucial factor in the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. In nursing, leadership styles significantly influence job performance, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes (Adeyemo & Usman, 2024). Different leadership styles, including transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership, affect how nurses perform their duties, their motivation levels, and their commitment to patient care (Ibrahim et al., 2023).
Minna General Hospital in Niger State, like many healthcare institutions in Nigeria, faces challenges related to staff motivation, workload, and overall job performance. A strong and effective leadership approach can help address these challenges by fostering a supportive work environment, encouraging professional growth, and improving nurses’ job satisfaction (Ogunyemi & Hassan, 2024). However, ineffective leadership can lead to burnout, reduced morale, and high turnover rates, which ultimately affect patient care quality.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of different leadership styles on nurses' job performance in Minna General Hospital, Niger State. Understanding how leadership influences nurses’ efficiency and effectiveness will provide insights into strategies for improving management practices in healthcare institutions.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses play a vital role in healthcare delivery, yet their job performance is often affected by the leadership styles of their supervisors. In many Nigerian hospitals, including Minna General Hospital, there is a lack of clear leadership strategies tailored to improving nurses’ efficiency and work environment (Olawale & Yusuf, 2023). Studies have shown that ineffective leadership contributes to job dissatisfaction, high staff turnover, and decreased patient care quality (Eze et al., 2024).
Despite the recognized importance of leadership in nursing, there is limited research on the relationship between leadership styles and job performance among nurses in Niger State. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing how different leadership styles impact nurses’ job performance in Minna General Hospital.
