Background of the Study
Livestock production is a key component of agricultural systems in many parts of Nigeria, including Paikoro Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State. The area has a strong tradition of cattle, sheep, and goat farming, which forms the basis of many households' livelihoods. However, livestock production in Paikoro faces various challenges influenced by geopolitical factors such as land ownership disputes, grazing routes, environmental factors, and local governance. This study seeks to explore how geopolitical elements—such as regional politics, land tenure systems, and inter-communal conflicts—affect livestock production in Paikoro LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Livestock farming in Paikoro LGA faces growing challenges related to competition over grazing lands, political tensions over land use policies, and the impact of climate change. These issues are compounded by geopolitical factors such as cross-border trade policies and the fluctuating support from local governments. The migration of herders across state lines and the increasing frequency of violent conflicts between herders and farmers further exacerbate the situation. This study will investigate the interplay of these geopolitical factors on livestock production and propose solutions to improve the sector's sustainability.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of geopolitical factors on livestock production in Paikoro LGA.
To evaluate how land tenure systems and grazing policies affect livestock farmers in Paikoro.
To identify the role of inter-communal conflicts and cross-border trade in shaping livestock production.
To recommend strategies for mitigating the negative effects of geopolitical factors on livestock farming in Paikoro.
1.4 Research Questions
How do geopolitical factors, such as land disputes and grazing routes, affect livestock production in Paikoro LGA?
In what ways do inter-communal conflicts and cross-border policies influence the livestock sector in Paikoro?
What strategies can be implemented to improve livestock farming in the face of geopolitical challenges?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Geopolitical factors such as land tenure issues, grazing routes, and cross-border trade policies have a significant negative impact on livestock production in Paikoro LGA.
Inter-communal conflicts exacerbate the challenges faced by livestock farmers, leading to reduced productivity.
Effective policy interventions and conflict resolution strategies can significantly enhance livestock production in Paikoro.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the ways geopolitical factors influence livestock production and offer recommendations for improving the sector's resilience. It will be valuable for policymakers, agricultural extension services, and local governments working to address the challenges of livestock farming in the region. Additionally, the findings will contribute to understanding the broader impacts of geopolitical issues on agricultural economies.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Paikoro LGA in Niger State, examining the specific geopolitical factors that influence livestock production. Limitations include potential difficulty in obtaining comprehensive data on local land disputes and conflicts, as well as the complexity of cross-border trade policies.
