Background of the Study
Pankshin Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State is home to a diverse population, with significant ethnic, cultural, and religious communities. These factors contribute to both the opportunities and challenges faced by youth in the region, particularly in terms of their involvement in politics. Geopolitical issues, such as ethnic divisions, political party rivalries, and the influence of regional political power, play a crucial role in shaping the extent to which youth are able to participate in political processes (Adamu & Kazeem, 2024). These geopolitical factors often determine access to political platforms, educational opportunities, and employment prospects, all of which influence political engagement. This study aims to assess how these geopolitical issues impact youth involvement in politics in Pankshin LGA, with a focus on local governance, political affiliations, and the role of youth organizations in fostering political participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing interest in political participation among the youth in Pankshin, several geopolitical issues, including ethnic tensions, political instability, and a lack of institutional support, have hindered their full involvement in political processes. These factors affect not only the opportunities available to young people to engage in politics but also their perception of political efficacy and representation. This study seeks to explore how these geopolitical issues affect youth political participation in Pankshin LGA.

  • To assess the role of local political leaders and organizations in encouraging or discouraging youth political participation.

  • To explore the relationship between political education and youth engagement in politics in Pankshin.

  • How does political education affect the level of youth engagement in politics in Pankshin?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical issues, such as ethnic and political rivalries, negatively affect youth involvement in politics in Pankshin LGA.

  • Local political leadership and youth organizations play a critical role in encouraging or discouraging political participation among young people.

  • Political education positively influences youth political participation in Pankshin LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how geopolitical dynamics shape youth political participation in Pankshin, offering recommendations for policymakers, youth organizations, and local political leaders to better engage the youth in politics. The findings could also inform national policies aimed at improving youth involvement in political processes (Adamu & Kazeem, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the geopolitical factors affecting youth political participation in Pankshin LGA, Plateau State. Limitations include potential biases in data collection due to political sensitivities and the limited representation of certain youth groups in political processes.
