Background of the Study
Dutse Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State is a region rich in cultural heritage, with a long history of traditional practices, arts, and rituals. However, the preservation of these cultural identities has been increasingly influenced by geopolitical boundaries, particularly as state and national policies impact local governance and cultural initiatives. The imposition of geopolitical boundaries, especially in the context of administrative divisions and resource allocation, has led to challenges in safeguarding the region's cultural heritage (Usman & Bashir, 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of these boundaries on the efforts to preserve Dutse's cultural assets, exploring both the positive and negative effects of geopolitical influences on local heritage management strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The establishment of geopolitical boundaries in Nigeria has had mixed effects on cultural heritage preservation. In Dutse LGA, the division of regions for administrative purposes has sometimes undermined traditional institutions responsible for cultural preservation, leading to challenges in safeguarding local heritage. This study will examine the extent to which geopolitical boundaries in Dutse have impacted cultural preservation efforts, with a focus on the influence of state and national policies on local cultural practices.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine how geopolitical boundaries influence cultural heritage preservation in Dutse LGA.

  • To assess the role of local governance and national policies in supporting or hindering cultural preservation in Dutse.

  • To propose recommendations for enhancing cultural heritage preservation in light of geopolitical challenges in the region.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical boundaries impact cultural heritage preservation in Dutse LGA?

  • What role do local and state governments play in preserving cultural heritage in the face of geopolitical challenges?

  • How can policies be reformed to better support cultural heritage preservation in Dutse LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical boundaries negatively affect the preservation of cultural heritage in Dutse LGA.

  • Local governance plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative impact of geopolitical boundaries on cultural preservation.

  • Policy reforms at both the state and national levels can enhance cultural heritage preservation efforts in Dutse LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be significant in understanding the relationship between geopolitical boundaries and cultural heritage preservation. It will provide insights for local, state, and federal governments on how to integrate cultural preservation into regional planning and governance strategies (Usman & Bashir, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the cultural heritage preservation challenges within Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, particularly in relation to geopolitical boundaries. Limitations include potential access issues to heritage sites due to administrative restrictions and local sensitivities surrounding cultural practices.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Boundaries: Political and administrative borders that divide regions and influence governance, resource allocation, and cultural practices.

  • Cultural Heritage Preservation: The efforts and strategies aimed at safeguarding traditional customs, art, history, and cultural practices from degradation or extinction.

  • Dutse Local Government Area: The administrative region in Jigawa State, Nigeria, with significant cultural heritage and challenges in preserving its traditions (Usman & Bashir, 2024).
