Background of the Study
Geopolitical conflicts, which often stem from ethnic, religious, or political tensions, significantly impact social cohesion within communities. In Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, Nigeria, the effects of such conflicts have been particularly pronounced, given the diverse ethnic composition and historical challenges faced by the region (Oje & Ibrahim, 2024). Geopolitical conflicts in Otukpo, including disputes over land, resources, and political representation, have resulted in strained relationships among various groups, undermining social harmony and cooperation. The study aims to explore how these geopolitical conflicts have shaped social cohesion in Otukpo, evaluating both the destructive and potentially constructive roles they play in community dynamics.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Otukpo has experienced various forms of geopolitical conflict that have disrupted social cohesion and communal peace. Ethnic tensions, competition for political power, and conflicts over resources have caused divisions within the community, affecting social unity and the ability to collectively address local challenges. This research seeks to examine how geopolitical conflicts influence social cohesion in Otukpo and explore strategies to strengthen communal ties amidst these challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of geopolitical conflicts on social cohesion in Otukpo LGA.

  • To assess the role of local leadership in mitigating the effects of these conflicts on community relations.

  • To propose strategies for enhancing social cohesion and community peacebuilding in Otukpo.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical conflicts impact social cohesion in Otukpo LGA?

  • What role does local leadership play in managing these conflicts and fostering social harmony?

  • What strategies can be employed to improve social cohesion in Otukpo amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical conflicts have a significant negative impact on social cohesion in Otukpo LGA.

  • Effective local leadership can mitigate the impact of these conflicts on community relations.

  • Implementing peacebuilding initiatives will improve social cohesion in Otukpo.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding the dynamics of social cohesion in conflict-affected regions, providing valuable insights for policymakers, community leaders, and peacebuilding organizations. The findings will offer strategies to address the root causes of conflict and foster unity in Otukpo (Oje & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Otukpo LGA in Benue State and examines the influence of geopolitical conflicts on social cohesion. Limitations include access to community leaders and the challenges of conducting conflict-sensitive research in politically volatile areas.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Conflicts: Disputes driven by ethnic, religious, or political tensions that affect the social and political landscape.

  • Social Cohesion: The strength of social relationships, trust, and cooperation within a community.
