Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Environmental sanitation in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara State is significantly influenced by geopolitical factors, including local governance, political affiliations, and resource distribution. The LGA has faced numerous challenges regarding waste management, water supply, and sanitation infrastructure, which are exacerbated by political instability and regional conflicts (Abdullahi & Usman, 2023). The local government’s capacity to effectively address environmental sanitation issues is often compromised by inadequate funding, poor governance, and lack of coordination with neighboring regions.
Additionally, the political landscape in Kaura-Namoda, influenced by ethnic and regional affiliations, often dictates how resources are allocated for sanitation projects. These divisions can lead to uneven service provision, where certain areas receive more attention than others based on political considerations. This study will explore how these geopolitical factors impact environmental sanitation efforts in Kaura-Namoda LGA and suggest approaches to overcoming these challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by local and state governments to improve environmental sanitation in Kaura-Namoda, the area continues to grapple with waste management issues, lack of sanitation infrastructure, and contamination of water sources. These challenges are largely attributed to geopolitical factors such as political instability, ethnic divisions, and poor resource allocation. This study aims to investigate these challenges and provide recommendations for improving environmental sanitation in the region.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of geopolitical factors in environmental sanitation. The findings will help local governments, policymakers, and environmental organizations develop targeted strategies to address sanitation challenges and improve public health in Kaura-Namoda LGA.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Kaura-Namoda LGA in Zamfara State, analyzing how geopolitical factors affect environmental sanitation. Limitations include potential difficulties in obtaining accurate data on local sanitation programs and political dynamics within the LGA.
