Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Social mobility in Bali Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State is influenced by several factors, with geopolitical boundaries playing a critical role. Bali, like many other LGAs in northeastern Nigeria, is characterized by a complex socio-political environment shaped by ethnic diversity, political alignments, and historical tensions. These geopolitical boundaries often restrict access to resources, educational opportunities, and employment, directly impacting individuals' ability to move up the social ladder (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2024).

The LGA is bordered by other regions with different ethnic and political influences, which has shaped the access to social services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Additionally, local governance, driven by the political climate and regional alliances, significantly impacts the social policies that either promote or hinder upward mobility. This study aims to explore how these geopolitical boundaries influence social mobility in Bali LGA, focusing on the challenges and opportunities arising from such divisions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Social mobility in Bali LGA has been constrained by the limitations imposed by political boundaries, poor governance, and unequal resource distribution. These factors, combined with local ethnic and political dynamics, significantly restrict individuals' ability to access opportunities for better education, healthcare, and employment. This study seeks to examine how geopolitical boundaries contribute to these limitations and propose solutions for enhancing social mobility in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of geopolitical boundaries on social mobility in Bali LGA.
  2. To identify the challenges that residents face in accessing opportunities for upward mobility due to local political and ethnic divisions.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing social mobility in Bali LGA by addressing geopolitical barriers.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical boundaries in Bali LGA affect social mobility?
  2. What challenges do individuals in Bali face in accessing social mobility due to local political and ethnic divisions?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve social mobility in Bali LGA, considering its geopolitical dynamics?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical boundaries significantly affect social mobility in Bali LGA.
  2. Political and ethnic divisions within Bali LGA hinder access to opportunities for upward mobility.
  3. Policy interventions that address geopolitical challenges can improve social mobility in Bali LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical insights into the effects of geopolitical boundaries on social mobility in Bali LGA. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, local governments, and development organizations in designing strategies to overcome these barriers and improve access to education, healthcare, and employment for residents of the LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Bali LGA in Taraba State and will examine the role of geopolitical boundaries in shaping social mobility. Limitations may include access to data on social mobility metrics and potential biases in local governance responses.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Boundaries: Political, cultural, and social divisions that delineate regions and influence resource allocation and opportunities.
  • Social Mobility: The ability of individuals to move up or down the social ladder in terms of income, education, and occupational status.
  • Political Divisions: The categorization of regions based on political alliances, ethnic composition, or governance priorities.
