Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Lapai Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State faces significant challenges in electricity distribution, influenced by various geopolitical factors. These factors include local governance issues, regional political dynamics, and the distribution of resources by the federal government. Despite the growing need for reliable electricity for both residential and commercial purposes, electricity distribution remains inefficient, with many areas in Lapai experiencing power shortages and inconsistent supply (Aliyu & Yusuf, 2023). The challenges in electricity distribution are often exacerbated by the political and economic interests that govern resource allocation in the region.
The distribution of electricity in Lapai is further complicated by regional politics, with some areas receiving priority due to political affiliations, while others are left underserved. Local government authorities play a role in advocating for resources and ensuring equitable distribution, but their ability to influence decisions is often constrained by broader geopolitical factors, including state and federal policies (Raji & Ahmed, 2024). This study will explore the effect of these geopolitical factors on electricity distribution in Lapai, examining the role of political dynamics, resource distribution, and local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electricity distribution in Lapai LGA is severely affected by geopolitical factors, including political interference, inadequate resource allocation, and governance challenges. These factors result in unreliable and uneven access to electricity, hindering economic development and quality of life. This study aims to investigate how these geopolitical factors influence electricity distribution in Lapai and propose strategies for improvement.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of geopolitics in electricity distribution, offering recommendations for policymakers, utility providers, and local governments to ensure more equitable and efficient electricity access in regions like Lapai.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Lapai LGA in Niger State and will assess the geopolitical factors affecting electricity distribution. Limitations include difficulty in accessing data from power distribution companies and local authorities, as well as challenges in evaluating the impact of regional politics over time.
