Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Kiyawa Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State is predominantly agricultural, with farming as the main economic activity. Sustainable agriculture is crucial for the socio-economic development of the region, but geopolitical factors—such as political stability, land ownership policies, and inter-regional agricultural practices—have had a significant influence on agricultural sustainability (Aminu & Sulaimon, 2024). The region is impacted by issues such as land tenure systems, political interference in agricultural policies, and the implementation of national agricultural programs that shape farming practices.

Geopolitical trends such as climate change, land disputes, and government policies on resource distribution also affect the productivity and sustainability of agriculture in Kiyawa LGA. This study will explore how these geopolitical factors influence sustainable farming practices in the region, considering both the positive and negative impacts of regional and local political decisions on agriculture (Usman & Bello, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA faces numerous challenges due to geopolitical trends. Conflicts over land ownership, inconsistent agricultural policies, and climate-related issues have hindered the growth and sustainability of farming in the region. This study aims to evaluate the influence of these geopolitical factors on agricultural sustainability in Kiyawa and provide recommendations for enhancing agricultural practices.

  1. To assess the impact of geopolitical trends on sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA.
  2. To evaluate the role of political and environmental factors in shaping agricultural practices in Kiyawa LGA.
  3. To propose strategies for improving sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical trends influence sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA?
  2. What political and environmental factors affect farming practices in Kiyawa LGA?
  3. What strategies can promote sustainable agricultural practices in Kiyawa LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical trends significantly affect sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA.
  2. Political and environmental factors play a major role in determining agricultural sustainability in Kiyawa LGA.
  3. Strategies to promote sustainable agriculture can enhance farming practices in Kiyawa LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how geopolitical trends affect agricultural sustainability in Kiyawa LGA. The findings will be beneficial to policymakers, agricultural development agencies, and local farmers, offering strategies to improve agricultural practices, promote sustainability, and enhance food security in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kiyawa LGA in Jigawa State, examining the role of geopolitical factors in sustainable agriculture. Limitations include challenges in obtaining reliable data from local farmers and government officials, as well as difficulties related to the region's variable climatic conditions and agricultural practices.
