Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Kiyawa Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State is predominantly agricultural, with farming as the main economic activity. Sustainable agriculture is crucial for the socio-economic development of the region, but geopolitical factors—such as political stability, land ownership policies, and inter-regional agricultural practices—have had a significant influence on agricultural sustainability (Aminu & Sulaimon, 2024). The region is impacted by issues such as land tenure systems, political interference in agricultural policies, and the implementation of national agricultural programs that shape farming practices.
Geopolitical trends such as climate change, land disputes, and government policies on resource distribution also affect the productivity and sustainability of agriculture in Kiyawa LGA. This study will explore how these geopolitical factors influence sustainable farming practices in the region, considering both the positive and negative impacts of regional and local political decisions on agriculture (Usman & Bello, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Sustainable agriculture in Kiyawa LGA faces numerous challenges due to geopolitical trends. Conflicts over land ownership, inconsistent agricultural policies, and climate-related issues have hindered the growth and sustainability of farming in the region. This study aims to evaluate the influence of these geopolitical factors on agricultural sustainability in Kiyawa and provide recommendations for enhancing agricultural practices.
