Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Illegal mining activities have been a significant challenge in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara State. In Maru Local Government Area (LGA), illegal mining has not only led to environmental degradation but also contributed to insecurity, economic instability, and social unrest. The geopolitical factors influencing illegal mining activities in Maru LGA are multifaceted, involving local power structures, regional economic interests, and national policies on natural resource management. The issue is compounded by weak enforcement of mining regulations, inadequate infrastructure, and complex relationships between local communities and mining operators (Shehu & Adamu, 2023).

Maru LGA has witnessed a surge in illegal mining, primarily driven by the search for gold and other precious minerals. Local political leaders, traditional authorities, and regional actors often play ambiguous roles in the regulation of mining activities, sometimes turning a blind eye to illegal operations for personal or political gains. Additionally, national policies on mining often clash with the local economic interests, making it difficult to implement effective strategies to curb illegal mining. This study explores the geopolitical strategies employed by local, state, and federal authorities in addressing illegal mining activities in Maru LGA (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Illegal mining in Maru LGA has resulted in significant environmental and social challenges, yet efforts to curb these activities remain largely ineffective. The complex interplay of local, regional, and national political interests complicates the formulation of effective strategies to address illegal mining. This study aims to examine the geopolitical strategies in place to combat illegal mining in Maru LGA and assess their effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the geopolitical strategies used to address illegal mining in Maru LGA.
  2. To assess the role of local and regional authorities in curbing illegal mining activities.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of efforts to combat illegal mining in Maru LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What geopolitical strategies have been employed to curb illegal mining in Maru LGA?
  2. How do local and regional political dynamics influence the effectiveness of strategies against illegal mining in Maru LGA?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce illegal mining in Maru LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical strategies have a significant impact on reducing illegal mining activities in Maru LGA.
  2. Local and regional political interests complicate the implementation of effective strategies against illegal mining in Maru LGA.
  3. Effective coordination between local, state, and federal authorities can improve efforts to combat illegal mining in Maru LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the geopolitical challenges that influence the fight against illegal mining in Maru LGA, helping to inform policy decisions at the local, state, and national levels. By evaluating the effectiveness of current strategies, the research will contribute to the development of more effective and coordinated efforts to address illegal mining, which can lead to improved environmental sustainability and socio-economic stability in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the geopolitical strategies used to address illegal mining in Maru LGA, Zamfara State. Limitations include challenges in accessing reliable data from local authorities and potential political biases in the reporting of mining activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Illegal Mining: The extraction of minerals without a legal license or in violation of environmental and safety regulations.
  • Geopolitical Strategies: Policies and actions undertaken by local, regional, and national governments to address issues arising from political, economic, and social dynamics within a specific geographical area.
  • Environmental Degradation: The deterioration of the natural environment through human activities, such as mining, that cause long-term damage to ecosystems.
