 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to the numerous theorists and researchers, explanations for criminal behavior have taken on a variety of forms and aspects. Some people attribute it to a flawed family structure or a delayed maturation of the individual's personality. Others place an emphasis on issues like as inequality, the impact of the environment, and deficiencies in the socialization process (Balal 2017). In this sense, criminal activities might be driven by a wide variety of variables and conditions that are not predictable in advance. According to Bales (2019), crime may be seen as a failure of the social system since the institutions of that system do not function satisfactorily for all of its constituents. The social context in which individuals find themselves is the focus of sociologists' study. Is it possible that the individual is not the source of the problem, but rather the social situation in which the individual lives? The question that has to be answered here is why people engage in actions that are in defiance of the norms that have been established, transgressions that may ultimately lead to their being branded as engaging in criminal activity in terms of how social processes work.

According to the crime index, the majority of people who are known to conduct street crimes are low-income, have low levels of education, are frequently jobless, and live in low-income districts (Awe 2019). Would someone who seems to have their social and financial life together turn out to be a criminal? In the context of this body of work, it is necessary to have an understanding of the socio-economic background of the majority of juveniles and criminals in order to establish whether or not there is a correlation between having a low socio-economic status (also known as poverty) and engaging in criminal behavior.
