Background of the Study

Traditional rulers have historically played an important role in political decision-making in Nigeria, especially in local governance. In Bwari Local Government Area (LGA) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), traditional rulers continue to wield significant influence over their communities, shaping not only local cultural and social affairs but also political decision-making processes. The role of traditional rulers in Nigerian politics is often a complex one, balancing between the formal political structure and their customary authority (Ogunyemi & Nasir, 2023).

This study explores the influence of traditional rulers in political decision-making within Bwari LGA, examining how these leaders interact with elected officials, government agencies, and local communities. It seeks to understand the political leverage that traditional rulers hold, as well as their role in promoting or hindering democratic processes. The research will shed light on the contributions of traditional leadership to governance and development in Bwari LGA (Umar & Abdullahi, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The relationship between traditional rulers and political authorities in Bwari LGA remains underexplored, despite the significant role these traditional leaders play in shaping local politics. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which traditional rulers influence political decision-making, public policy, and governance outcomes in Bwari LGA. There is a need to understand their contributions to community development, political stability, and their role in bridging the gap between formal and informal governance systems.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of traditional rulers in political decision-making in Bwari LGA.

  2. To examine the relationship between traditional rulers and political officeholders in Bwari LGA.

  3. To evaluate the impact of traditional rulers on governance and community development in Bwari LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role do traditional rulers play in political decision-making in Bwari LGA?

  2. How do traditional rulers interact with political officeholders in Bwari LGA?

  3. What impact do traditional rulers have on governance and community development in Bwari LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional rulers play a significant role in political decision-making in Bwari LGA.

  2. Traditional rulers have a strong relationship with political officeholders in Bwari LGA.

  3. The influence of traditional rulers positively affects governance and community development in Bwari LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the political role of traditional rulers in Nigeria, particularly in the context of modern governance. The findings will help policymakers better understand how to collaborate with traditional leadership to promote good governance, community development, and conflict resolution in Bwari LGA (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2023).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on traditional rulers in Bwari LGA, FCT, and their influence on political decision-making. Limitations include potential biases in the responses of traditional rulers and difficulties in accessing comprehensive data on the political interactions of traditional leaders.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
