Background of the Study

Youth unemployment remains a significant issue in Nigeria, with a large proportion of the youth population struggling to find gainful employment. Entrepreneurship is increasingly seen as a viable solution to this problem, with many youth entrepreneurship programs aimed at equipping young people with the skills and resources needed to start their own businesses. In Zaria Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, various government and non-governmental organizations have initiated youth entrepreneurship programs to address the unemployment crisis.

These programs are designed to provide young people with training, mentorship, access to finance, and networking opportunities. However, despite the numerous initiatives, the actual impact of these programs on job creation in Zaria has not been adequately assessed. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of youth entrepreneurship programs in Zaria, focusing on their contribution to job creation and the development of sustainable businesses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Youth entrepreneurship programs have been widely promoted as a solution to unemployment in Zaria LGA. However, there is limited empirical evidence to assess whether these programs have led to substantial job creation or have helped young people to establish sustainable businesses. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, considering factors such as participant success rates, the scale of job creation, and long-term business viability.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have youth entrepreneurship programs contributed to job creation in Zaria LGA?

  2. What skills and resources provided by these programs have been most beneficial for youth entrepreneurs in Zaria?

  3. What challenges do youth entrepreneurs face in establishing and maintaining businesses in Zaria LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Youth entrepreneurship programs have led to a significant increase in job creation in Zaria LGA.

  2. The skills and resources provided by these programs have helped participants establish sustainable businesses.

  3. Youth entrepreneurs in Zaria LGA face significant challenges such as access to finance and market penetration.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it evaluates the effectiveness of youth entrepreneurship programs in addressing unemployment in Zaria LGA. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, program designers, and youth organizations seeking to enhance the impact of these initiatives. Furthermore, the study will contribute to broader efforts to tackle youth unemployment in Nigeria through entrepreneurship.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on youth entrepreneurship programs in Zaria LGA and assess their impact over the past five years. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported data from program participants, and challenges in measuring long-term outcomes.
