Background of the Study

Cooperative societies have historically played a crucial role in promoting financial inclusion and economic development by providing accessible credit to individuals and small businesses. In Nigeria, where access to formal financial institutions is often limited, cooperative societies serve as an alternative means for people to obtain credit for agricultural activities, trade, and small-scale enterprises. These organizations operate based on mutual assistance, where members contribute savings and access loans at lower interest rates compared to commercial banks.

In Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State, cooperative societies have become essential financial intermediaries, especially for farmers, traders, and artisans who struggle with limited access to formal banking services. Studies have shown that cooperative societies not only improve credit accessibility but also contribute to economic empowerment and poverty reduction in rural communities (Abubakar & Yahaya, 2023). Despite their benefits, several challenges hinder their effectiveness, including poor management, low financial literacy among members, and limited capital base (Ibrahim & Sule, 2024). Additionally, some cooperative societies struggle with loan recovery due to members defaulting on payments, which threatens their sustainability.

Given these issues, evaluating the role of cooperative societies in enhancing credit accessibility in Funtua is essential. This study seeks to assess how cooperative societies facilitate access to credit, the challenges they face, and their impact on economic activities in the area. The findings will provide insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and cooperative members on how to strengthen these organizations for sustainable credit provision and economic growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the presence of cooperative societies in Funtua, many individuals and businesses continue to face difficulties in accessing affordable credit. Traditional banking institutions often require collateral and complex documentation, which many small-scale entrepreneurs and farmers cannot provide. Although cooperative societies aim to bridge this gap, issues such as poor financial management, lack of regulatory oversight, and low member contributions limit their ability to provide sufficient credit (Usman & Bello, 2023). Moreover, cases of loan defaults have weakened the sustainability of many cooperative societies, making it difficult for them to function effectively. This study seeks to evaluate the role of cooperative societies in credit accessibility and identify solutions to improve their effectiveness in Funtua.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of cooperative societies in facilitating credit accessibility in Funtua.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by cooperative societies in providing credit to members.

  3. To assess the impact of cooperative societies on small businesses and economic development in Funtua.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do cooperative societies facilitate credit accessibility in Funtua?

  2. What challenges hinder cooperative societies from effectively providing credit to members?

  3. What is the impact of cooperative societies on small businesses and economic development in Funtua?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Cooperative societies significantly improve credit accessibility in Funtua.

  2. Several challenges hinder the effective operation of cooperative societies in Funtua.

  3. Cooperative societies positively impact small businesses and economic development in Funtua.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study contributes to the understanding of cooperative societies as an alternative financial system for individuals and small businesses with limited access to formal banking. The findings will be valuable to policymakers in designing policies that strengthen cooperative societies and improve their financial sustainability. Additionally, the study will benefit cooperative members by providing insights into best practices for efficient financial management.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on cooperative societies operating in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State. It examines their role in credit accessibility, the challenges they face, and their impact on local businesses and economic growth. The study does not cover other informal credit systems outside cooperative societies.
