Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Electoral violence is one of the most pressing challenges facing Nigerian democracy, with far-reaching consequences for political stability and democratic consolidation. Kogi LGA in Kogi State has experienced several incidents of electoral violence, particularly during major elections, where political rivalries often escalate into violent confrontations (Aliyu & Gidado, 2024). The use of violence as a tool for political control, intimidation, and voter suppression has plagued the democratic process, eroding public trust in electoral systems and undermining the legitimacy of elected officials.

This study aims to assess the impact of electoral violence on democracy in Kogi LGA, focusing on how such violence affects voter behavior, election outcomes, and overall democratic practices. It will also explore the social, political, and economic consequences of electoral violence in the region, providing insights into how it can be mitigated to ensure the sustainability of democratic governance.
