Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth empowerment schemes are vital for reducing poverty and promoting socio-economic development, especially in rural areas like Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State. These schemes are designed to provide young people with the skills, resources, and support needed to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the local economy. By focusing on sectors such as agriculture, education, and entrepreneurship, youth empowerment schemes aim to address the root causes of poverty and enhance the livelihood opportunities of young people (Babangida & Usman, 2024).

In Akwanga, various government and non-governmental programs have been introduced to empower youth and reduce poverty, including vocational training, financial support for small businesses, and community development initiatives. Despite these efforts, the effectiveness of youth empowerment schemes in reducing poverty in Akwanga remains a topic of debate. This study will evaluate how these schemes have contributed to poverty reduction, focusing on outcomes such as increased income, improved living standards, and community development (Chika & Ibrahim, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although several youth empowerment schemes have been implemented in Akwanga, there is limited understanding of their actual impact on poverty reduction. Challenges such as insufficient funding, poor program implementation, and lack of sustained support have undermined the effectiveness of these schemes. This study aims to evaluate the impact of youth empowerment programs on poverty reduction in Akwanga LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of youth empowerment schemes in reducing poverty in Akwanga LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of specific youth empowerment programs on income generation and employment in Akwanga.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the success of youth empowerment schemes in poverty reduction.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. To what extent have youth empowerment schemes contributed to poverty reduction in Akwanga LGA?

  2. How have specific youth empowerment programs impacted income generation and employment in Akwanga?

  3. What measures can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of youth empowerment schemes in reducing poverty?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Youth empowerment schemes significantly contribute to poverty reduction in Akwanga Local Government Area.

  2. Specific programs targeting entrepreneurship and vocational training have a greater impact on poverty reduction in Akwanga.

  3. Enhancing funding and support systems will improve the success of youth empowerment schemes in Akwanga.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve youth empowerment programs in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. By providing evidence of the effectiveness of these schemes in reducing poverty, the study will inform policymakers, development agencies, and local government authorities on how to optimize resources and strategies for greater impact. The findings will also contribute to academic literature on youth empowerment and poverty alleviation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on youth empowerment schemes in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and assesses their impact on poverty reduction. It does not cover other LGAs or broader national-level programs. A limitation of the study may include challenges in obtaining accurate data on program outcomes, particularly from youth beneficiaries who may have limited access to reporting systems.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Youth Empowerment Schemes: Programs designed to provide young people with the skills, resources, and opportunities to become economically independent and contribute to community development.

  • Poverty Reduction: The process of reducing the level of poverty within a population through initiatives aimed at increasing income, employment, and access to basic needs.

  • Income Generation: The creation of financial resources through employment, entrepreneurship, or other economic activities.
