Background of the Study
Public housing estates are essential to meeting the housing needs of low-income individuals and families in urban areas. In Nigeria, many states, including Katsina, have developed public housing estates to provide affordable housing for residents. However, one of the key challenges facing these estates is the lack of effective maintenance. Over time, public housing estates in Katsina have experienced a decline in the quality of infrastructure, including roads, water systems, and electricity. This deterioration often leads to a decrease in property values and affects the quality of life for residents.
The issue of maintenance in public housing estates is critical as it impacts the sustainability and long-term viability of these estates. Poor maintenance can result in residents’ dissatisfaction, lower rents, and higher costs for repairs and upgrades. This study aims to assess the challenges associated with maintaining public housing estates in Katsina State, with the goal of identifying strategies for improving maintenance practices and ensuring the long-term success of these estates.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the initial promise of public housing estates in Katsina State, maintenance challenges have led to the deterioration of these properties. The failure to maintain critical infrastructure, coupled with inadequate resources and governance issues, has exacerbated the problem. This study will examine the causes of maintenance challenges in public housing estates and explore how these issues can be addressed to ensure that residents continue to benefit from affordable, sustainable housing.
