Background of the Study
Urban renewal refers to the process of redeveloping and revitalizing deteriorating urban areas to improve living conditions and stimulate economic development. In Nigeria, urban renewal projects have been implemented in many cities to address issues of overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and poor housing conditions. Jos, the capital of Plateau State, has experienced rapid urbanization and population growth, resulting in the expansion of informal settlements and the deterioration of urban infrastructure. In response, various urban renewal initiatives have been launched by both the government and private sector to regenerate the city and provide better living conditions.
However, urban renewal often comes with unintended consequences, particularly the risk of displacement for residents of areas targeted for redevelopment. In Jos, residents of informal settlements and low-income neighborhoods may face eviction or displacement due to gentrification or the construction of new commercial developments. While urban renewal can improve infrastructure and create economic opportunities, it can also exacerbate inequalities by displacing vulnerable populations who are unable to afford new housing. This study will examine the urban renewal initiatives in Jos, with a particular focus on the risks of displacement, and assess how these initiatives impact the local population.
Statement of the Problem
Urban renewal projects in Jos have aimed to address issues of urban decay and inadequate infrastructure, but they often come with the risk of displacing low-income residents and informal settlers. The displacement of these populations can lead to social unrest, increased poverty, and a worsening of housing challenges for vulnerable groups. Despite the importance of addressing displacement risks, there is limited research on how urban renewal initiatives in Jos have affected the city's residents, particularly in terms of displacement and the subsequent impact on social and economic wellbeing. Understanding these dynamics is critical to ensuring that urban renewal efforts in Jos lead to more inclusive and equitable outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on urban renewal initiatives and displacement risks in Jos, Plateau State. It will examine the perspectives of residents, local government officials, urban planners, and developers involved in urban renewal efforts. One limitation of the study is the potential difficulty in obtaining data on the experiences of displaced individuals, as well as the challenge of accessing detailed records on urban renewal policies and their outcomes.
