Background of the Study

Sustainable tourism is a concept that aims to minimize the negative environmental, social, and cultural impacts of tourism while maximizing its economic benefits. In Nigeria, Cross River National Park, located in the southeastern part of the country, is one of the most ecologically diverse and protected areas, known for its rich flora and fauna. The park is a major ecotourism destination in Nigeria, attracting both domestic and international tourists who seek to explore its unique biodiversity, including endangered species like the Cross River gorilla.

Sustainable tourism practices in Cross River National Park focus on conserving the park’s natural resources while providing economic opportunities for local communities. These practices include responsible waste management, community-based tourism initiatives, and the promotion of low-impact activities such as wildlife viewing, hiking, and cultural exchange programs. Additionally, sustainable tourism in the park supports conservation efforts by generating revenue for the protection of endangered species and their habitats.

This study will evaluate the sustainable tourism practices implemented in Cross River National Park, assessing their effectiveness in promoting environmental conservation, socio-economic development, and community involvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing recognition of sustainable tourism as a model for preserving natural resources and benefiting local communities, the effectiveness of these practices in Cross River National Park remains unclear. There are concerns that increased tourism may lead to environmental degradation if not properly managed. This study aims to assess the extent to which sustainable tourism practices in the park are achieving their conservation and socio-economic goals, as well as the challenges involved in implementing these practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of sustainable tourism practices in Cross River National Park.
  2. To examine the impact of sustainable tourism on the park’s environmental conservation efforts.
  3. To assess the socio-economic benefits of sustainable tourism for local communities around the park.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are the sustainable tourism practices implemented in Cross River National Park?
  2. What impact has sustainable tourism had on environmental conservation in the park?
  3. What are the socio-economic benefits of sustainable tourism for local communities around Cross River National Park?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sustainable tourism practices in Cross River National Park significantly contribute to the conservation of its natural resources.
  2. Sustainable tourism in the park has a positive impact on the socio-economic development of surrounding communities.
  3. The effectiveness of sustainable tourism practices in Cross River National Park is hindered by challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and insufficient local involvement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on sustainable tourism practices in Cross River National Park, examining both their environmental and socio-economic impacts. Data will be collected from park management, local communities, and tourists. Limitations include challenges in measuring the long-term impacts of sustainable tourism and potential biases in reporting from stakeholders.
