Background of the Study

Ecotourism is a growing sector that combines sustainable tourism practices with the preservation of natural environments and biodiversity. In Nigeria, one of the most notable ecotourism destinations is the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State, which is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and numerous bird species. The reserve has long been recognized as a critical area for biodiversity conservation, attracting tourists from across the world who are interested in experiencing Nigeria’s natural heritage.

Ecotourism in Yankari is designed to offer an educational and sustainable way of experiencing nature while promoting conservation efforts. According to recent reports, the revenues generated by ecotourism activities in the reserve are reinvested into conservation projects, such as anti-poaching initiatives, habitat restoration, and biodiversity monitoring (Okorie et al., 2024). This not only helps in maintaining the ecological balance but also fosters community involvement, as local communities are trained and employed in various ecotourism-related activities, such as tour guiding, hospitality services, and wildlife protection.

This study will investigate the role of ecotourism in promoting biodiversity conservation in the Yankari Game Reserve, focusing on the effectiveness of ecotourism practices in protecting wildlife and their habitats.

Statement of the Problem

Yankari Game Reserve, despite its ecological importance, faces significant conservation challenges, including poaching, habitat degradation, and human-wildlife conflicts. While ecotourism has been proposed as a solution to these issues, there is limited research on its direct impact on biodiversity conservation within the reserve. This study seeks to examine how ecotourism activities in Yankari are contributing to the conservation of its unique biodiversity and explore the challenges and successes of this model.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of ecotourism in supporting biodiversity conservation in the Yankari Game Reserve.
  2. To examine the effectiveness of ecotourism-based conservation programs in reducing poaching and protecting endangered species.
  3. To evaluate the socio-economic impact of ecotourism on local communities and their involvement in conservation efforts.

Research Questions

  1. How does ecotourism contribute to biodiversity conservation in Yankari Game Reserve?
  2. What is the impact of ecotourism on reducing poaching and protecting endangered species in Yankari?
  3. How has ecotourism affected local communities’ involvement in conservation efforts and their socio-economic development?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Ecotourism in Yankari Game Reserve significantly contributes to biodiversity conservation by supporting habitat protection and anti-poaching initiatives.
  2. Ecotourism programs have effectively reduced poaching and enhanced the conservation of endangered species in Yankari.
  3. Ecotourism has provided socio-economic benefits to local communities, increasing their engagement in conservation activities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on ecotourism activities in the Yankari Game Reserve, Bauchi State, and their role in biodiversity conservation. Data will be collected from ecotourism operators, local communities, and conservationists. Limitations may include difficulties in quantifying the direct impacts of ecotourism on biodiversity and the challenge of distinguishing ecotourism from other conservation efforts.

Definitions of Terms
