Background of the Study

Smart tourism integrates advanced technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and personalization of tourism services. In the hospitality industry, IoT technologies such as smart room controls, keyless entry, and personalized guest experiences have revolutionized the way hotels operate and interact with guests.

Kano, as a major cultural and commercial hub in Nigeria, has seen significant growth in its hospitality industry. However, the adoption of smart tourism technologies is still evolving. Implementing IoT solutions can improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance guest satisfaction, positioning Kano as a competitive destination. According to Ahmed and Suleiman (2023), IoT adoption in Kano’s hospitality sector has the potential to increase customer satisfaction rates by 25%.

This study evaluates the adoption of smart tourism technologies and IoT in Kano’s hospitality industry, exploring their benefits, challenges, and potential for growth.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the global trend toward smart tourism, the hospitality industry in Kano faces challenges in adopting IoT technologies, including high implementation costs, limited technical expertise, and resistance to change. As a result, many hotels in Kano continue to rely on traditional systems, limiting their ability to deliver efficient and personalized services to guests.

This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the current state of IoT adoption in Kano’s hospitality industry and providing recommendations for enhancing its application.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of IoT adoption in Kano’s hospitality industry.

  2. To assess the benefits of smart tourism technologies for hotels and guests in Kano.

  3. To identify the challenges affecting the adoption of IoT technologies in Kano’s hospitality sector.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of IoT adoption in Kano’s hospitality industry?

  2. What benefits do smart tourism technologies offer to hotels and guests in Kano?

  3. What challenges hinder the adoption of IoT technologies in Kano’s hospitality sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The adoption of IoT technologies in Kano’s hospitality industry is relatively low.

  2. Smart tourism technologies significantly enhance operational efficiency and guest satisfaction.

  3. Challenges such as high costs and limited expertise hinder the adoption of IoT technologies in Kano.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the adoption of IoT technologies in Kano’s hospitality industry, examining their benefits, challenges, and impact on hotel operations and guest experiences. Limitations include the availability of data on IoT usage and the willingness of hotel operators to share information about their technological practices.
