Background of the Study
Climate change poses significant threats to natural environments, particularly in areas that rely on ecotourism as a key part of their economy. Niger State, located in the central region of Nigeria, is home to diverse ecosystems, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries that attract ecotourists from across the country and abroad. However, the increasing impact of climate change, including rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and extreme weather events, threatens the sustainability of these ecosystems and, by extension, the ecotourism industry in the state.
Ecotourism, which promotes responsible travel to natural areas while conserving the environment, is vulnerable to climate change due to its reliance on stable and healthy ecosystems. Niger State’s ecotourism sector, which includes parks like the Kainji Lake National Park and the Shiroro Dam area, is at risk of losing its appeal to tourists if climate change leads to degradation of these natural resources. This study aims to investigate how climate change affects ecotourism in Niger State, examining the direct and indirect consequences on both the environment and the local tourism economy.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of climate change and its potential impacts on tourism, there is limited research on how climate change specifically affects ecotourism in Niger State. The state’s ecotourism industry is increasingly exposed to climate risks, but there is insufficient data on how these changes influence tourism patterns, wildlife populations, and local economies. Without comprehensive research, it is difficult to develop strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on ecotourism in the region. This study seeks to explore how climate change is affecting the sustainability of ecotourism in Niger State and to identify adaptive strategies that can help preserve the sector.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the effects of climate change on ecotourism in Niger State.
2. To assess the impact of climate change on the biodiversity and natural resources that support ecotourism in Niger State.
3. To recommend strategies for adapting ecotourism in Niger State to the challenges posed by climate change.
Research Questions
1. How does climate change affect ecotourism in Niger State?
2. What impact does climate change have on biodiversity and natural resources in Niger State that support ecotourism?
3. What adaptive strategies can be implemented to sustain ecotourism in Niger State despite climate change?
Research Hypotheses
Ho1: Climate change does not significantly affect ecotourism in Niger State. Ho2: Climate change has no significant impact on biodiversity and natural resources supporting ecotourism in Niger State. Ho3: There are no significant adaptive strategies that can mitigate the effects of climate change on ecotourism in Niger State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on examining the effects of climate change on ecotourism in Niger State, Nigeria, with an emphasis on the ecological and economic consequences for the tourism industry. The study will also explore possible strategies for adapting to climate change. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate data on climate patterns and tourism trends, as well as the challenges of predicting future climate change impacts.
Definitions of Terms
• Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, and other atmospheric conditions that significantly affect ecosystems and human activities.
• Ecotourism: Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.
• Biodiversity: The variety and variability of life forms within an ecosystem, which is critical to the health and sustainability of that environment.
