Background of the Study

The tourism industry is increasingly shifting towards sustainability, as consumers and businesses become more aware of the environmental impacts of travel and hospitality. In many parts of the world, the rise of eco-friendly hotels is seen as a response to the growing demand for sustainable tourism. Eco-friendly hotels, which focus on reducing environmental impacts through energy-efficient systems, waste reduction, and sustainable resource management, have become a cornerstone of sustainable tourism practices. In Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, there has been a growing trend of eco-friendly accommodations emerging as part of the broader effort to promote sustainable tourism in the region.

Abuja, with its unique blend of urban development and natural attractions, holds significant potential for eco-friendly tourism. Sustainable practices in the hotel industry can contribute not only to environmental preservation but also to the economic growth of the region by attracting environmentally-conscious tourists. However, the adoption of eco-friendly practices in the hotel sector in Abuja has been relatively slow, with many traditional hotels still relying on conventional methods that are less environmentally friendly. This study aims to investigate the impact of eco-friendly hotels on sustainable tourism in Abuja, focusing on their contribution to environmental conservation, economic growth, and the overall tourist experience.

Statement of the Problem

While eco-friendly hotels are recognized as a key element in promoting sustainable tourism, their actual impact on the tourism industry in Abuja remains underexplored. Despite the growing awareness of sustainability, many hotels in the city have been slow to adopt eco-friendly practices. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical data on how the presence of eco-friendly hotels influences tourists’ decisions and the broader sustainability goals of the tourism sector. Without a clear understanding of their impact, it becomes challenging to formulate policies and strategies that encourage the development of sustainable tourism in Abuja. This study will examine how eco-friendly hotels contribute to sustainable tourism and the extent to which their practices align with environmental, social, and economic sustainability goals.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of eco-friendly hotels on sustainable tourism in Abuja.

2. To examine the role of eco-friendly hotels in promoting environmental conservation in the tourism sector.

3. To evaluate the economic and social benefits of eco-friendly hotels for the tourism industry and local communities in Abuja.

Research Questions

1. What is the impact of eco-friendly hotels on sustainable tourism in Abuja?

2. How do eco-friendly hotels contribute to environmental conservation in Abuja’s tourism sector?

3. What are the economic and social benefits of eco-friendly hotels for local communities and tourism businesses in Abuja?

Research Hypotheses

Ho1: Eco-friendly hotels do not significantly contribute to sustainable tourism in Abuja. Ho2: There is no significant relationship between eco-friendly hotels and environmental conservation in the tourism sector in Abuja. Ho3: Eco-friendly hotels do not significantly contribute to the economic and social development of local communities in Abuja.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on evaluating the role of eco-friendly hotels in promoting sustainable tourism in Abuja, Nigeria. It will explore the environmental, economic, and social aspects of eco-friendly hotels and their impact on the broader tourism industry. Limitations may include the availability of data on hotel operations, the difficulty in isolating the specific impact of eco-friendly practices from other tourism-related factors, and potential biases in self-reported data from hotel management.
