Background of the Study

Taraba State, located in northeastern Nigeria, is renowned for its diverse cultural heritage, including traditional festivals, music, dance, and art. Rural tourism, which involves visits to rural areas for leisure, education, or cultural experiences, provides an opportunity to showcase and preserve these cultural traditions while promoting economic development.

Rural tourism offers a platform for cultural exchange, where visitors interact with local communities and experience their way of life. However, modernization and globalization have led to the erosion of traditional practices in many parts of Taraba State. By fostering rural tourism, communities can protect their cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations.

This study examines the role of rural tourism in preserving cultural heritage in Taraba State, identifying challenges and opportunities for sustainable development.

Statement of the Problem

Despite its rich cultural resources, Taraba State faces challenges in preserving its traditions due to rapid urbanization, youth migration, and limited support for cultural initiatives. Rural tourism, which could serve as a tool for cultural preservation, remains underdeveloped in the state.

Factors such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and a lack of awareness about the benefits of rural tourism contribute to this problem. Without strategic interventions, the state risks losing its cultural identity and the economic benefits associated with cultural tourism.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of rural tourism in preserving cultural heritage in Taraba State.

  2. To identify the challenges affecting the development of rural tourism in the state.

  3. To propose strategies for promoting rural tourism as a means of cultural preservation.

Research Questions

  1. How does rural tourism contribute to cultural preservation in Taraba State?

  2. What challenges hinder the development of rural tourism in the state?

  3. What strategies can enhance rural tourism for cultural preservation?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Rural tourism significantly contributes to cultural preservation in Taraba State.

  2. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and funding limit the development of rural tourism.

  3. Effective strategies can enhance the role of rural tourism in preserving cultural heritage.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on rural tourism in Taraba State, particularly its impact on cultural preservation and challenges hindering its growth. Limitations include difficulties in accessing remote rural areas and obtaining accurate data from stakeholders.
