Background of the Study
Kebbi State, located in the northwestern region of Nigeria, is endowed with natural water bodies, including the River Niger and the Argungu fishing area, which serve as significant attractions for tourism. The annual Argungu Fishing Festival highlights the state’s potential for water-based tourism, including boat cruises. As leisure activities, boat cruises offer opportunities for relaxation, sightseeing, and cultural exposure, making them an important component of domestic tourism.
Boat cruise experiences provide tourists with unique perspectives on the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Kebbi State, contributing to the growth of domestic tourism. According to Yakubu and Bello (2023), the introduction of organized boat tours in Kebbi State has increased domestic tourist arrivals by 15% in recent years. However, the full potential of boat cruises as a driver of domestic tourism remains untapped due to inadequate infrastructure, safety concerns, and limited marketing efforts.
This study seeks to explore the role of boat cruise experiences in promoting domestic tourism in Kebbi State, identifying challenges and offering actionable recommendations to enhance their impact.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the natural water resources and cultural significance of Kebbi State, domestic tourism development remains underwhelming. Boat cruises, which hold immense potential to attract domestic tourists, are underutilized due to factors such as safety concerns, inadequate facilities, and poor promotion.
Moreover, the limited integration of boat cruises into the state’s broader tourism development strategies has hindered their contribution to the local economy. Without addressing these issues, Kebbi State risks missing out on significant opportunities for boosting domestic tourism and economic growth.
