Background of the Study
International sustainability frameworks, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), provide guidelines for corporate environmental policies. These frameworks encourage businesses to adopt sustainable practices, reduce environmental impacts, and align their operations with global standards. In Nigeria, where industrial activities contribute significantly to environmental challenges, these frameworks have become instrumental in shaping corporate environmental policies.
Many Nigerian corporations are integrating international sustainability frameworks into their operations to enhance transparency, attract investments, and comply with global trade requirements. However, challenges such as limited awareness, weak regulatory enforcement, and resource constraints affect the implementation of these frameworks. This study explores the role of international sustainability frameworks in shaping Nigerian corporate environmental policies, focusing on their impact and challenges.
Statement of the Problem
While international sustainability frameworks offer valuable guidelines for corporate environmental policies, their adoption in Nigeria is often inconsistent. Issues such as inadequate regulatory support, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to change hinder their effective implementation.
