Background of the Study

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a critical strategy for addressing environmental and social challenges worldwide. By integrating environmental sustainability and poverty reduction into their business practices, organizations can significantly impact communities and ecosystems. In Nigeria, CSR initiatives have gained traction as companies respond to rising demands for accountability and sustainable practices (Okonkwo & Adebayo, 2024).

Environmental degradation, poverty, and income inequality remain pressing issues in Nigeria. Through CSR, companies can invest in renewable energy, waste management, education, and community development to promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation. Studies suggest that effective CSR programs can simultaneously reduce poverty and enhance environmental sustainability, contributing to national development goals (Ahmed et al., 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing awareness of CSR, its implementation in Nigeria often focuses on philanthropy rather than long-term sustainability. Many CSR initiatives lack clear strategies for addressing environmental challenges or reducing poverty in a sustainable manner. The disconnect between corporate practices and community needs limits the impact of CSR on social and environmental outcomes (Chukwu & Adeola, 2023).

This study explores how CSR initiatives can effectively promote environmental sustainability and poverty reduction in Nigeria, highlighting best practices and areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of CSR in promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

  2. To evaluate the impact of CSR initiatives on poverty reduction in Nigerian communities.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for enhancing CSR effectiveness in Nigeria.

Research Questions

  1. How does CSR promote environmental sustainability in Nigeria?

  2. What is the impact of CSR initiatives on poverty reduction in Nigeria?

  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of CSR in Nigeria, and how can they be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. CSR does not significantly promote environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

  2. CSR initiatives do not significantly impact poverty reduction in Nigerian communities.

  3. Proposed strategies for CSR enhancement do not significantly improve its effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of CSR in promoting environmental sustainability and poverty reduction in Nigeria between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include variability in CSR practices across industries and regions.
