Background of the Study
Marine ecosystems are vital to the livelihoods of fishing communities, particularly in coastal regions like Rivers State, Nigeria. However, overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution threaten the sustainability of fishing businesses. Community-based marine conservation (CBMC) has emerged as an effective approach to managing marine resources sustainably. CBMC involves local communities in conservation efforts, fostering ownership and accountability while ensuring the long-term viability of marine ecosystems (Udoh et al., 2023).
Rivers State, home to Nigeria's extensive mangrove forests and rich marine biodiversity, faces significant challenges in balancing conservation with economic activities like fishing. Studies show that participatory conservation initiatives can reduce overfishing, protect critical habitats, and improve the livelihoods of local fishers (Okechukwu & Akpan, 2024). This study explores the role of CBMC in sustaining fishing businesses in Rivers State, focusing on its impact on resource management, community engagement, and economic outcomes.
Fishing businesses in Rivers State are increasingly threatened by depleted fish stocks, habitat degradation, and ineffective regulatory frameworks. Despite efforts to enforce marine conservation policies, the exclusion of local communities from decision-making processes has limited their success. This disconnect undermines conservation efforts and threatens the livelihoods of fishing communities (Eze & Nwankwo, 2023).
There is a need to investigate how CBMC initiatives can address these challenges by fostering community participation and ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources in Rivers State.
To assess the impact of community-based marine conservation on resource sustainability in Rivers State.
