Background of the Study
Social media platforms have transformed political communication and voter mobilization in contemporary democracies, particularly in regions with limited access to traditional media channels (Abubakar & Usman, 2024). In Nigeria, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp play a crucial role in disseminating political information, fostering civic engagement, and organizing voter turnout. Maiduguri Local Government, Borno State, has seen an increase in the use of social media for political activities, despite the challenges of insecurity and infrastructural deficits. Social media facilitates real-time interaction between political candidates and the electorate, creating a virtual space for dialogue and accountability (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). This study assesses how social media contributes to voter mobilization in Maiduguri, examining its effectiveness, challenges, and implications for electoral participation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing adoption of social media in political campaigns, its role in mobilizing voters in Maiduguri Local Government remains underexplored. Issues such as misinformation, digital literacy gaps, and limited internet access hinder its full potential (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, the effectiveness of social media in translating online engagement into actual voter turnout is uncertain. This study seeks to evaluate the influence of social media on voter mobilization in Maiduguri, addressing these gaps in the literature.
