Background of the Study
Marathon tourism is a growing segment of the global tourism industry, with significant economic contributions to host cities. These events attract international and domestic participants, along with spectators, boosting spending in areas such as accommodation, transportation, and local businesses (Johnson et al., 2024). Jos, Plateau State, known for its scenic landscapes and conducive climate, has become a prime location for marathons.
The economic potential of marathon tourism in Jos lies in its ability to generate revenue, create employment, and promote the state’s cultural and natural heritage. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and limited marketing have constrained the growth of this tourism segment. A thorough assessment of marathon tourism's economic impact in Jos is necessary to unlock its full potential and inform policy and investment decisions.
Despite the increasing popularity of marathons in Jos, the economic contributions of this tourism segment remain underexplored. Limited data on the direct and indirect benefits of marathon tourism hampers strategic planning and investment. Additionally, infrastructural deficits and inadequate promotion limit the ability of the region to attract larger audiences and participants (Ali & Obinna, 2023).
