Background of the Study

Electoral transparency is widely recognized as a cornerstone of democratic governance, as it fosters public trust and ensures the legitimacy of electoral outcomes. Transparency in electoral processes involves the availability of information, impartiality of electoral bodies, and accountability mechanisms that prevent malpractice (Ibrahim & Sule, 2024). Public trust in governance, on the other hand, reflects citizens’ confidence in political institutions and their belief in the system’s ability to deliver justice and equity (Usman & Ahmed, 2023). In Sokoto South Local Government, issues of electoral malpractice, including vote-buying, lack of transparency in vote tallying, and delays in election results, have raised questions about the credibility of governance structures (Olawale & Garba, 2025). Recent studies have emphasized that the erosion of trust in governance often stems from perceived irregularities in elections, which undermine democratic accountability and hinder socio-economic development (Yusuf & Adebayo, 2023). This study investigates the interplay between electoral transparency and public trust in governance within the context of Sokoto South, shedding light on how reforms can restore confidence in the electoral process and democratic institutions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The persistent lack of transparency in electoral processes in Sokoto South Local Government has significantly eroded public trust in governance. Instances of electoral malpractice, ranging from manipulation of voter registers to delays in the announcement of results, have led to widespread disenchantment among the electorate (Abdullahi & Musa, 2023). This lack of trust not only undermines the legitimacy of elected officials but also poses a threat to democratic consolidation. While existing studies highlight the importance of electoral transparency, there is limited research on its direct impact on public trust at the local government level, particularly in Sokoto South. This gap in the literature necessitates an in-depth investigation to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving electoral processes and rebuilding public trust.

The findings will inform strategies for enhancing electoral transparency, thereby fostering greater public confidence in governance. Additionally, the study contributes to the academic discourse on electoral integrity, offering localized perspectives that complement broader national and international studies.
