Background of the Study
The intersection of electoral violence and human rights violations remains a critical area of concern in political science, particularly in fragile democracies such as Nigeria. Electoral violence, often manifesting in physical assaults, intimidation, destruction of property, and voter suppression, undermines democratic consolidation and infringes upon fundamental human rights (Olaide & Ekanem, 2023). Human rights violations in this context encompass the denial of rights to life, freedom of movement, and freedom of political participation, which are guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights frameworks (Adesina, 2024). In Yobe State, and specifically in Damaturu Local Government, these issues are exacerbated by historical tensions, socio-political dynamics, and insurgency-related instability. Scholars argue that electoral violence not only disrupts electoral processes but also entrenches fear, erodes public trust, and perpetuates cycles of impunity (Amadi & Bello, 2025). Recent research has highlighted how weak institutional frameworks, a lack of accountability, and limited civic engagement create an environment where electoral violence flourishes, with significant implications for human rights (Muhammad & Yusuf, 2023). The political climate in Damaturu serves as a microcosm of broader national challenges, where the interplay between electoral violence and human rights violations demands urgent scholarly and policy attention.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite Nigeria’s adoption of democratic governance, electoral violence persists as a significant challenge, with far-reaching implications for human rights, particularly in regions like Yobe State. The situation in Damaturu Local Government exemplifies this troubling trend, where political actors exploit systemic weaknesses to perpetrate violence, thereby infringing on citizens’ rights to freely participate in democratic processes (Adamu & Afolayan, 2023). These violations are further compounded by inadequate responses from security agencies and a judicial system that often fails to hold perpetrators accountable. This creates a culture of impunity, where victims are left without recourse, and democratic values are undermined (Abubakar, 2024). While numerous studies have explored electoral violence in Nigeria, there remains a dearth of localized research that examines its direct relationship with human rights violations, particularly in Damaturu. Addressing this gap is essential for developing targeted interventions that promote peace and uphold democratic principles.

1.6 Significance of the Study

By focusing on Damaturu Local Government, the research offers localized insights that are essential for policymakers, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders working to strengthen democracy and protect human rights in conflict-prone regions. The findings will help identify gaps in existing institutional frameworks and recommend actionable strategies for mitigating electoral violence and safeguarding human rights. Furthermore, the study will add to the academic literature by filling a critical gap in understanding the localized dynamics of electoral violence and its implications for human rights, thereby serving as a valuable resource for future research.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to Damaturu Local Government in Yobe State, focusing on the relationship between electoral violence and human rights violations. Data collection will involve primary and secondary sources within this locality. The study does not extend to other local governments or regions.
