Background of the Study
Water is a critical resource in the brewing industry, serving as the primary ingredient in beer production and playing a key role in cleaning, cooling, and other operational processes. However, water scarcity and pollution pose significant challenges to sustainability in the brewing sector, particularly in Nigeria, where rapid industrialization and urbanization have increased water demand (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). Corporate water conservation strategies, such as water-efficient production techniques, wastewater recycling, and sustainable sourcing, have emerged as essential measures for breweries aiming to minimize environmental impact while maintaining profitability.
Sustainable water management in breweries aligns with global environmental goals, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which emphasizes water conservation and quality improvement (UN-Water, 2023). Breweries across Nigeria, including major industry players like Nigerian Breweries Plc and Guinness Nigeria, have adopted various water conservation strategies, ranging from technological innovations in production to corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives focused on water stewardship. However, the effectiveness of these strategies remains underexplored, particularly in the context of sustainability outcomes such as resource efficiency, cost savings, and environmental impact reduction. This study seeks to examine how corporate water conservation strategies influence sustainability in Nigerian breweries, addressing both the successes and challenges faced by industry stakeholders.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of water conservation in the Nigerian brewing industry, many breweries continue to face challenges related to water shortages, high operational costs, and regulatory pressures (Ojo et al., 2023). Traditional brewing processes consume large volumes of water, often leading to inefficient usage and excessive wastewater discharge. While some breweries have initiated conservation strategies, the extent to which these initiatives contribute to long-term sustainability remains unclear. Furthermore, inadequate policy enforcement and technological constraints hinder the adoption of advanced water-saving techniques.
This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap by evaluating the impact of corporate water conservation strategies on sustainability in Nigerian breweries. It will investigate how these strategies affect water consumption, operational efficiency, and environmental footprint, providing insights into best practices for sustainable brewing.

The study will examine water-saving initiatives, wastewater treatment processes, and the broader impact on sustainability. The limitations may include restricted access to proprietary data from breweries and potential variability in the adoption of conservation strategies across different brewery locations.
